Tina & Amy for Prez

As ordained and foretold by dog in Roxie's World a couple of weeks ago, here are Tina Fey and Amy Poehler on last night's season premier of Saturday Night Live doing Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton. The pair are making a joint appearance before the nation to denounce sexism in media coverage of the campaign. It is, without a doubt, the funniest thing SNL has done since Darrell Hammond and Molly Shannon were doing (Bill) Clinton and Monica Lewinsky back in the 90s. Fey has a little trouble finding Palin's accent in the beginning, but once she does it's pitch-perfect. Poehler's Clinton is, from start to finish, sheer genius. Wait for the moment when she rips a piece of wood off the edge of the podium in response to Palin's banal suggestion that, "Anyone can be president -- All you have to do is want it."

Go on. Watch the vid. Get your day started with a soul-cleansing belly laugh. Just make sure you are wearing a Depends before you hit that play button.

    Hi Roxie,

Hillary said that her supporters needed to move over to Obama because in that move they were supporting political issues that were very, very important, not only a candidate. I thought the main "issue" that was so very important was the revolution for women in opening up the presidency to them.

But Hillary's logic is now being proved correct by Sarah Palin -- looking at those far right politics is staggering, and sobering, especially in regard to preemptive war and the environment. If McCain had picked an experienced, moderate woman candidate (like Susan Collins), who could have truly stood toe-to-toe with Hillary Clinton, I think McCain would probably win this election -- But seeing Palin and Hillary side by side in the SNL skit, provided the final jolt in common sense I needed (and perhaps others needed), to get behind Obama. The skit was done also with a certain tenderness toward Palin, which helped to highlight her politics rather than her womanhood or personality. Kudos to Saturday Night Live!!!

Here's to Hillary Clinton, to Roxie's World! and Go Obama!

  2. The SNL skit was priceless!

Senator Clinton and Governor Palin are proof that women can and do diverge on important issues.

Even on the question of whether women should vote!

Most people are totally in the dark about HOW the suffragettes won votes for women, and what life was REALLY like for women before they did.

Suffragettes were opposed by many women who were what was known as 'anti.'

The most influential 'anti' lived in the White House. First Lady Edith Wilson was a Washington widow who married President Wilson in 1915, after the death of his pro-suffrage wife.

The First Lady's role in Wilson's decision to jail and torture Alice Paul and hundreds of other suffragettes will never be fully known, but she was outraged that these women picketed her husband's White House.

I'd like to share a women's history learning opportunity...

"The Privilege of Voting" is a new free e-mail series that follows eight great women from 1912 - 1920 to reveal ALL that happened to set the stage for women to win the vote.

It's a real-life soap opera about the suffragettes! And it's ALL true!

Powerful suffragettes Alice Paul and Emmeline Pankhurst are featured, along with TWO gorgeous presidential mistresses, First Lady Edith Wilson, Edith Wharton, Isadora Duncan and Alice Roosevelt.

There are tons of heartache on the rocky road to the ballot box, but in the end, women WIN!

Thanks to the success of the suffragettes, women have voices and choices!

Exciting, sequential episodes are great to read on coffeebreaks, or anytime.

  3. Eh, thanks for the commercial message, I guess, Virginia. We'll leave it up on account of we're totally pro-suffrage here in Roxie's World, but don't make a habit of it, 'kay? Roxie's World is proudly ad-free.

And, EI, we are pleased that SNL's faux-Palin and Hillary helped you to make up your mind about the election. There's still a lot of Swiss Miss being drunk around here, though, again, we declare that NO ONE will be voting for McCain-Palin. Honor bright, kids. Ain't gonna happen.

  4. I would like a bumper sticker that states, very clearly:

Sarah Palin : Hillary Clinton :: The Spice Girls : Betty Friedan
